Sulmona Turism Office. Guided Tours of Abruzzo… Many places to visit, many emotions to be felt. Abruzzo, a region as yet still largely unknown, ‘demonised’ in the past for its mountains, bears, wolfs, shepherds and… its outlaws, has on the contrary always been a most hospitable place with luxuriant flora and fauna and a vital, cordial and generous indigenous population. A decisively authentic land, careful to conserve its naturalistic patrimony, traditions and historic rituals, tied to those values that ennoble humanity and confer a sense of completeness to everyday life. Nothing will be left to chance: useful information, entrance costs for museums, grottos, natural reserves, practical advice for drivers and tourists alike. The services we provide will be made available to you by means of a ‘plain speech’ contract. We will place at your disposal our expertise: our guides and accompaniers will be formally assigned and remunerated directly by the cooperative society ‘Servizi Turistici Sulmona’. We work throughout the entire region of Abruzzo. The operating center, that manages the contacts and coordinates the work of the guides and accompaniers, is based in Sulmona, and is run by the cooperative society ‘Servizi Turistici Sulmona’. A team of staff with more than ten years experience, experts in the field of the welcoming tourists and the promotion of tourism which operates in the service of the city of Sulmona but above all in the service of the tourist. We will not intermediate between yourselves and hotels and restaurants. We will however, upon request, indicate to you those we consider to be the best for asserted quality of service offered; this without any ties or agreements. One single aim: a network of young people, passionate about Abruzzo committed to high quality tourism, respectful of the region and sensitive towards guests. Our objective: to apply the most sacred principles of welcome and of the right to experience new places as a guest, evoking in them the feeling of being part of said places as soon as they arrive and of wanting to come back again even before they leave.

Rural Italian Charm with Abruzzo Vacation Rentals

Abruzzo is one of Italy’s best kept secrets. Far from the busy tourist towns of the north, Abruzzo is a quiet rural gem. It’s filled with spectacularly beautiful natural scenery, medieval castles, monasteries, quaint villages and Roman ruins. For those that take the time to explore the region, you’ll wonder why it’s not promoted more. But perhaps it’s the quietness that is really part of its charm. The beautiful rural setting, friendly villages and ancient buildings almost make you feel as though you have taken a trip back in time. After spending a few days in your vacation home, you may feel you never want to leave. Abruzzo is a region that attracts nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and people with a keen interest in Italian culture.

Abruzzo accommodation options

Renting a self catering apartment in Abruzzo is one of the best ways to soak up the culture of this region. Choose from lovingly restored ancient villas to cosy farm cottages. Many have sweeping views over the Adriatic Sea. You can sit and enjoy meals alfresco, soaking up the amazing views. This is the ideal destination for a romantic vacation or honeymoon. In this quiet rural atmosphere, you may feel like you are in your own private piece of paradise.

Activities and sites, things to do in Abruzzo

Abruzzo has arguably one of the richest deposits of natural and cultural attractions in Italy. Almost a third of the region is protected national park land. It is one of the few regions where you can see bears, wolves and chamois. Nature walks, hiking and climbing are popular activities among visitors. There are routes that can accommodate novices as well as more challenging alpine routes.

The Appenines are the tall glacial mountains that separate Abruzzo from Rome and western Italy. The region has good quality snowfalls each winter and hosts 21 different ski areas. Some areas are almost comparable in height to that of the Alps, Roccaraso is the largest skiing area south of the Alps. Cross country skiing is popular, especially on the elevated plain of Campo Imperatore.

L’Aquila is the region’s largest city and most well known for its medieval architecture. Its most famous landmarks include a 16th-century castle and the fountain with 99 spouts (canale). The fountain represents the 99 villages that united to form the city. There are several beautiful old churches in L’Aquila. Perhaps the most striking is the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio which has an impressive gothic interior.

Sulmona is a town famous for its sugared almonds which are collectively known as Confetti. Two churches worth visiting to view their architecture are the 13th-century San Francesco delle Scarpe and the 11th-century cathedral of San Panfilo.

Pescara, on the Adriatic coast, has several miles of beachfront promenade and sandy beaches suitable for swimming and sunbathing. From there, you can take a drive up the coast and enjoy the magnificent coastal scenery.

Travelling to and around Abruzzo

Abruzzo has its own international airport, located just outside of Pescara. Low-cost European airlines have daily scheduled flights that arrive and depart from here. As an alternative, you can route via Rome and rent a car to drive to Abruzzo. Once in the region, it is best to have your own car to get around in. There are three main roadways that connect Abruzzo with other parts of Italy. All are toll roads and information on the toll fees can be obtained from the car rental companies when you collect the car.

The rail system is known for its reliability and bus schedules between the towns operate frequently. Driving through the countryside of Abruzzo, be aware of livestock that may meander across the road. The area is a large sheep farming district and it’s not uncommon to find a flock absentmindedly standing in the middle of a road; check Abruzzo travel guide on iGuide for additional Abruzzo region tourist information.
