Holiday accommodation in the Peligna valley just right for all the festivals held in and around Sulmona including the Giostra
During the last week of July and the first week of August the whole town is transformed into a mediaeval borg, with all the pomp
and pagentry you could desire. Knights, ladies and marching bands all parade together along the Confetti bedecked Corso, from La
Villa all the way along to piazza Garibaldi. Come and enjoy the spectacle - you won't regret it!
Every summer Sulmona is the venue for the "Giostra Cavaleresca"', everyone dresses in medieval costume - let the joustings begin.
A young page girl enjoying the spectacle. Don't be surprised to meet a medieval marching band as you walk along.
Piazza Garibaldi becomes the main point of focus for all jousting events. Lords and Ladies are to be seen walking around throughout Sulmona.
The noise from the marching bands is quite unforgettable, during the daily processions the flag bearers put on wonderful diplays
Why not come and enjoy the spectacle yourselves, simply check the calendar to see whether the last week of July or first week of August is still available and if so book today! The Giostra is a wonderful family event that can be enjoyed by spectators of all ages. Tickets costing from around €8 can be bought during the festival from various official outlets along the Corso. It's absolutely fabulous occasion full of life, colour and noise! - not to be missed!
The horse riders fly around Piazza Garibaldi against the clock. They are awarded on both their completion time and the number of hoops they manage to pick off using their lances. There are three different sizes of hoops that hang from gantries at various points along the figure of eight circuit - the smallest hoops (around 10cm across) carry the most points and circuit times are measured to the 100th of a second.
This is a wonderful summer jousting festival that dates back to medieval times and that has been rejuvanated and brought once more to the fore. During the last week of July and the first week of August the town is transformed into a medieval borg with Lords and Ladies parading along the Corso. The most important aspect of course is the jousting itself which takes the form of a series of competitions that all the family can follow and enjoy. Will your favourite knight win?...
Lots of love to you both... Connie and Ian, Ulverston, UK
