Holidays In Abruzzo - What to see and do... Swimming

Lake Scanno is great for swiming during the summer months

We have lots of places where you can go swimming as a family. Lake Scanno is just up the road from us but, as you may imagine, the water can be pretty nippy! During July and August though, in the midday heat, even the Italian visitors will jump in, in order to cool off. Of course, a more picturesque location you could not wish to find.

Arriving at the lake from Villalago turn down to the right along the eastern shore. After two hundred metres you'll see a grassy area on the left on the lake side. There is also a treed area which affords fabulous shade. At the far end you'll see a cafè which is well stocked and very reasonably priced.

As an alternative to Lake Scanno there is a sports complex at Sulmona which has both an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor one. The indoor pool which is quite spacious is open all the year and the outdoor one from April until late September.

On the way to Raiano at Corfinio, another town nearby, there is an acqua theme park called the Acqua Garden which is ideal for families with children. There are slides for the kids and the pool is surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas - they also have a picnic area. There is also a seperate hydromassage pool too.

Please bare in mind that as with all public swimming pools in Italy the wearing of swimming caps is compulsory (cuffia). If you have your own then fine but if not they can be bought at the acquaparc for around €5 each.
